What is stress?

Stress researcher, Hans Selye, divided stress into two categories: eustress and distress. Eustress is positive stress, for example the stress you may feel riding on a fairground ride, or travelling to a holiday destination. Distress, on the otherhand, is a negative stress placed on the body and mind, from unresolved emotional issues, failing to meet ones needs adequately, relationship discord, overworking, work pressure and so on.

Left unresolved these issues can result in chronic levels of stress which can lead to a range of physical and emotional illnesses and problems.

Stress is a part of life, and in this day and age complete avoidance of stress is not a realistic goal. Instead the aim is to learn to cope more effectively with stress and find more resourceful ways of dealing with stress, whilst taking actions that do not increase life's stressors.

How can hypnosis help manage levels of stress?

Hypnosis is a remarkably effective treatment for stress issues. Firstly, it triggers in the body what medical doctor, Herbert Benson, calls the 'relaxation response.' Physiologically this is the direct opposite of stress and people find that entering hypnosis on a regular basis enables them to quickly gain control of their levels of stress.

Hypnosis can also help to change a persons response to stressful events enabling them to respond more resourcefully, while remaining emotionally grounded and positive.
