The differences between Hypnosis & Hypnotherapy

A client recently asked if there are differences between hypnosis and hypnotherapy. To get technical we say that hypnosis is the process of inducing a hypnotic state in a person, whereas hypnotherapy is utilising the hypnotic state to effect therapeutic change. Both hypnosis and hypnotherapy are an art form that take considerable time, energy and practice to get good at. Typically a person can learn to competently induce hypnosis in another person in just a few hours, but using the hypotic state to help them make positive changes in their lives takes a considerable amount of skill development.

Quit Smoking with Hypnosis

Hypnosis is a powerful tool to help people break their addition to smoking. I have seen countless people who had claimed to have tried everything to stop smoking, become non smokers with the help of hypnosis. It leads me to believe that the problem is not so much due to physical addiction to nictone, but more to do with the habitual aspects of smoking. Certainly the lines are blurred between physical addition and psychological habit, and there's no doubt that cigarettes are physically addictive, but it seems that by and large for the majority of people the problem is psychological. Of course manufacturers of lucrative quit smoking products would not want you to believe this. They would want you to believe that you are paralysed by a powerful physical addition, helpless to do anything without their product. But my own clinicl experience of helping many people quit smoking over the past 6 years simply does not corroborate this idea. And I am not the only hypnotherapist in the world that thinks this way.
